General steps for vmotion

General steps for Vmotion.

1. Install Vmware ESX 3.5 on two servers

2. Install Vcenter on the remote desktop ( windows xp, 2000 or 2003)

a. create a user account as an administrator.

b. Install Vcenter 2.5 and give the username and password  of the user account you just created

c. Check if all the services of VMware have started. ( Start>Control Panel>Admin Tools>Services). If not, start them.

3. In the Virtual center server, open the VI client application and login to localhost with username and password.

4. Next step is to add  new datacenter. Right click on Hosts & Cluster and click on New Datacenter.

5. Add host to the datacenter–right click on the datacenter you created in step 4 and click Add Host. Give all the required credentials as asked.

6. Follow step 4 and 5  for the other servers.

7. For common storage we need to configure VMkernel. For that,

a. Click on the vmware server which you added in step 4,5 and 6.

b. Go to networking tab. Click VMkernel and click next, give the IP address in the same subnet of the vmware esx server ip and click Next.

c. Click Finish and you will be asked if you want to configure the VMkernel now, Click No.

8. Install Guest OS in one of the Vmware Servers.

a. Insert the OS CD/DVD in the desktop.

b. Click on the Server where you want to install the OS.

c. Click the play button and click the connect the CD/DVD and click on the drive which has the CD/DVD inserted.

d. Click on the console tab and see if the installation has started. If not, double click on the console and press Ctrl+Alt+Insert to begin the installation again.

9.  Install 3 to 4 Guest OS on both the ESX servers.

10. Next try to create storage,it can be LUN or NFS. In our case it is NFS.

11. Create LVM storage on linux box and share it using NFS.

12. Mount that LVM storage on both the ESX server.

13. Now try to migrate the Guest OS to LVM storage from both ESX server.

14. Power On the guest OS .

15. For VMOTION we need to configure Vmkernel port.Go to networking tab and click porperties and edit the VMkernel and Remove all the secuirity policies and add vmkernel port and the VMkernel of both the servers must match.

16. Move the power on OS from one ESX server to another. The migration of poweron machine is known as Vmotion.
